Transfer Agency Ownership

Hand off Parent Agency or Sub-Agency ownership to another admin using a type-to-confirm transfer, and know who can do it.

When an owner is leaving, or you simply need to hand off control, TripLoft lets you transfer ownership to another admin rather than leaving the agency ownerless. The transfer is deliberately hard to trigger by accident: it requires typing a confirmation word, and undoing it means performing another transfer back.

When you'd use this

Transfer ownership whenever the current owner, of the Parent Agency or of a Sub-Agency, is leaving, changing roles, or otherwise needs to hand off ultimate control. The new owner gets full control of that agency, and the previous owner is demoted to Admin rather than removed, so they keep their access at a lower level.

Parent Agency vs Sub-Agency ownership

TripLoft treats these as two separate transfers, scoped to whichever level you're transferring:

  • Parent Agency ownership: promotes a Parent Agency admin to owner and demotes the current owner to admin. Initiated from the Members list at the Parent Agency level.

  • Sub-Agency ownership: promotes an admin of that Sub-Agency to its owner and demotes the current owner to admin. Initiated either from the Members list or from that Sub-Agency's own detail page.

Eligible new owners are admins at the same level, and they have to be active members. The dialog only lists people who already hold the admin role one level below owner.

Who can initiate a transfer

  • Parent Agency ownership can only be transferred by the current Parent Agency owner. Admins cannot transfer their own agency's ownership, at either level.

  • Sub-Agency ownership can be transferred by that Sub-Agency's owner, or by the Parent Agency's owner or admins, since they sit above every Sub-Agency.

In every case the transfer moves ownership away from the current owner of that scope. You can't transfer ownership of an agency you neither own nor sit above.

Good to know: Parent Agency owners and admins can transfer a Sub-Agency's ownership for emergencies and exceptions, not as a matter of routine. Talk to the Sub-Agency owner first wherever you can. See Roles & Permissions.

How to transfer ownership

  1. Open the Members row menu for the current owner and choose Transfer Ownership. For a Sub-Agency, you can also open its detail page and click Transfer Ownership in the header.

  2. Select the new owner from the New owner dropdown. Only eligible admins for that scope appear here.

  3. Type Transfer into the confirmation field exactly as shown.

  4. Click Transfer ownership. The button stays disabled until both a new owner is selected and the confirmation text matches.

Good to know: The demote and promote happen together as a single action, so you'll never end up with two owners, or none, partway through.

This is irreversible from the dialog

There's no undo. Once you confirm, the new owner has full control and the previous owner is an admin. Reversing it means performing another transfer back, done by the new owner or by someone above them in the hierarchy, using the same steps.

Before suspending a Sub-Agency, make sure ownership is set correctly. See Suspend an Agency for what happens once an agency is locked out.
